The basic course requalification program is 136
hours of instruction designed to meet the requirements for an individual
who has a three year or longer break in service as a California peace
officer or level I reserve officer to return to the field of law
enforcement. The course is certified by the California Commission on
Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) and consists of instruction
in the areas of human relations, legal update, preliminary
investigation, field tactics and force and weaponry. There is a 100
question comprehensive examination covering the classroom lectures and
practical skills testing for Firearms and Arrest Methods/Defensive
Tactics.
In order to be eligible for the course, a candidate
must provide a POST TRAINING PROFILE (no academy or POST
certificates will be accepted) or a letter from POST indicating they are
eligible for the course. If the candidate graduated from a basic
academy after July 1, 1999, he/she can take the requalification course
one time within six years. After six years they are required to repeat
the basic academy. The candidate must also provide a Department of
Justice clearance letter (dated within 3 months before the start of the
course) for firearms training. The letter is acquired by having
fingerprints taken and forwarded to the Department of Justice. A
listing of locations for printing can be found at
http://caag.state.ca.us/fingerprints/publications/contact.htm. In
addition to the listed rolling fee, there is also a $32.00 DOJ fee and
$19.00 firearms fee. DO NOT GET PRINTED FOR A POLICE OFFICER. YOU
