The Rio Hondo College Choral Music Program has grown in student participation and in the number and variety of courses available. in the last few years. Courses include the Vocal Arts and Advanced Vocal Arts Ensembles (Music 120 and Music 139), which are non-auditioned choral groups that emphasize ensemble singing skills, and rehearse and perform a wide variety of literature including classical, vocal jazz, popular and world music genres. At least two performances are present each semester. Last June , members of the Rio Hondo College Vocal Arts Ensembles traveled to New York City to join with others to sing the Durufle Requiem in Carnegie Hall.
In the 2007-2008 school year the Rio Hondo College Singers was established as the first auditioned choral group in many years at the college. This group performed with Choral Bel Canto, a Whittier based master works choral group, with the University of LaVerne, and with the Our Lady of Guadalupe Choir in the Durufle Requiem. This group also sang at various civic events and in addition to College based choral concerts. This active performance calendar will be the norm for future school years, with the addition of outreach performances at feeder high schools. Additionally, the women belonging to the Rio Hondo College Singers also rehearse as an advanced treble ensemble called Rio Voce, and the men rehease separately in a group named Stouthearted Men.
Many choral students also participate volunteer Handbell choir that is established at the beginning of each semester.
