On September 4, 2020, the Río Hondo Community College District Board of Trustees announced the following five candidates for Trustee Area 1:

- Maria Nuñez
- Cesar Perez
- David Siegrist
- Alfonso Somilleda
The Board of Trustees interviewed the candidates on September 23, 2020 at 6:00 p.m., per the timeline below.
On September 23, after interviewing the five candidates during a Special Board Meeting, the Board of Trustees voted 4-0 for a Special Election to fill the vacant seat of Trustee Area 1.
The Special Election will take place on March 2, 2021.
