WHICH DEGREES ARE IN DEMAND??
According to a recent survey of the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), the #1 IN DEMAND degree is ACCOUNTING.
“What consistently ranks as one of the top career opportunities in business? What frequently rates among the most popular majors on campus? What was the undergraduate degree chosen by Nike founding Phil Knight, Home Depot co-founder Arthur Blank, former acting director of the Federal Bureu of Investigation (FBI) Thomas Pickard, and numerous members of Congress? Accounting!”
Financial & Managerial Accounting, 2nd Edition, Weygandt, Kimmel, & Kieso, Wiley 2015.
Accounting is often referred to as the language of business. Whether you want to start your own business, get a business degree, or work in any business environment, it is important to understand accounting.
At Rio Hondo College, we strive to provide our students with the highest quality instruction. All of our instructors have accounting experience in addition to completing academic studies of accounting. We believe that our instructors do a better job of teaching when they have both academic and practical experience.
The goal of the accounting program is to provide students with the basic knowledge of accounting to be successful at an entry level position and/or transfer to a four year university. The accounting program at Rio Hondo is designed to serve four functions:
- To prepare students to be accounting paraprofessionals. The accounting employee with an associate degree can fill positions in business, industry, and government including cost-accounting technician, budget technician, general bookkeeper, and various positions in the federal government.
- To provide students with an opportunity to take accounting courses in order to advance in their present job or to qualify for a promotion. These students may only require a few courses and may not wish to earn a degree.
- To provide accounting courses to students earning degrees in related areas such as business management or computer technology.
- To allow the largest amount of credits to transfer to as many four-year colleges and universities as possible. We recommend that students be familiar with the requirements for the institution to which they will transfer. We encourage students to select their transfer college or university as early as possible. Students should see an advisor before choosing elective courses.
