classes are designed specifically for second-language
students:
Beginning English
-
ESL 10 works with English pronunciation, vocabulary,
listening, reading, and writing to improve basic English
skills.
Speaking and Listening
-
ESL 23A emphasizes English phrasing patterns, dictation,
and various speaking situations.

ESL 23B features formal speaking, note-taking, and
organizational skills in English.
Grammar
-
ESL 30 uses reading, writing, and listening skills to
focus on verb tenses and forms.

ESL 25, 29A,
29B, and
29C are one-unit self-study
modular courses using ESL grammar software in the
ESL/Language Lab. The focus is on English verb tenses
and verb forms.
Composition
-
ESL 27 is a beginning composition class focusing on the
fundamentals of writing English.

ESL 197 emphasizes longer writings with more complicated
sentence structure.

ESL 198, Advanced Composition, focuses on organizing and
writing formal essays and a research paper.
Vocabulary
-
ESL 24A, Basic Vocabulary, is designed to help
second-language students with the meanings, forms, use,
and pronunciation of words not already in their
vocabulary.
Non-Credit English
-
Rio Hondo offers classes in basic English and
Citizenship at various sites in the local communities.
