The
English as a Second Language
Program at Rio Hondo College serves the people of the
surrounding communities as well as foreign students
who need specialized education in the English language.
Through a variety of both credit and non-credit classes,
ESL at Rio Hondo offers instruction in the many language
skills necessary to succeed academically at the college
level or to gain more proficiency for employment or job
advancement.
Begun in 1980, the ESL Program has
served thousands of students over the years with quality
instructors and first-rate facilities. The Program
boasts the lowest maximum level of students in
credit classes, 24, of any of the surrounding community
colleges, allowing significant teacher-to-student
interaction. In addition, each semester the ESL
Program welcomes over 300 students from as many as different 30
countries in its continuing efforts to promote cultural
and linguistic variety in its classes. Just recently,
the College has invested in a new computer laboratory to
serve the special software language needs of the ESL and
language students at Rio Hondo. The Lab is networked
for Internet activities and features software programs
with listening, speaking, grammar, and pronunciation
functions for second-language students.
