We, the Reading faculty, believe that reading is a communicative process that involves much more than the ability to decode the printed word. A reader's goal is to understand as well as question the information the author wishes to share. In order to achieve this, one needs to comprehend the general vocabulary and specialized vocabulary of text, the organization of ideas in text, and the purpose and tone of the passage. Especially important is the personal experience and knowledge that each reader uses to relate to new material.
To guide our students to be independent readers and thinkers, we use a variety of instructional activities including individual, collaborative, and whole class learning. We recognize the diverse population at Rio Hondo and attempt to provide an atmosphere that fosters encouragement and acceptance of different ideas and opinions for optimum success. We encourage peer support as well as individual responsibility. Lastly, we recognize that reading is not a subject learned solely in a reading class but a process that is learned across a curriculum.
