Another Love Poem

Things cannot stay still with you, Love.
My world was once completely and utterly satisfied.
I was a quiet region of calm lakes begging to be left alone,
begging to maintain my softness and dark waters filled with tiny silver fish that danced and sang under the surface for only me and me alone.
I was a universe in which all things came together.
And the inertia moving stars and moons across my skies predicted
the birth of great men and the fall of great kingdoms
until one summer night you swept me away on a great chariot of feathery promises and the lights of jet liners coming and going above
the shadowy vineyards of Ontario.
Your sweetness made me want nothing but to break through
my bubble of contentedness
and rise up from my oceans of carefully guarded individualism.
You persuaded me to surrender myself completely to your restless kisses and warm palms.
But things cannot stay still with you, Love.
I watched you grow impatient with my naivety and my simplicity.
You wanted constant motion.
Your heart relentlessly searched for entertainment and action.
I realized that lazy fishing trips and quiet afternoons in each other’s arms could never sustain you.
Long, boney fingers of addiction wrapped themselves around your heart.
The gilded world of unfamiliarity and sleepless nights became yours.
Now things will never be still for you, Love.
Tired eyes and raging nerves have taken my place as your new companions.
Need wakes you in the mornings and Emptiness lies beside you at night.
Things can never stay still with you, Love.
Restless kisses mean goodbyes.
