How to Apply:
The Intensive English Language Academy (IELA) at Rio Hondo College provides immersion-based, learner-centered English language instruction to students from diverse backgrounds. The IELA is primarily geared toward International students with TOEFL scores below 450, preparing to enter college level instruction. However, all English language learners are welcome to enroll.
Four sequential levels of instruction are offered: Beginning, Intermediate Low, Intermediate High and Advanced, in eight week sessions. Students are initially placed according to level based on TOEFL score and can possibly progress through the entire program sequence in one academic year, from August through May. Summer instruction is also available.
Classes are held Monday through Thursday, between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm, with an hour lunch break from 12:00-1:00 pm. Fridays are typically reserved for class excursions or to allow students to pursue independent activities.
The IELA employs well qualified, highly-trained instructors who utilize modern resources, including comfortable classrooms and a state-of-the-art language laboratory/tutoring center. Instructional activities focus on practical and interactive language use in the four critical areas: reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
The Intensive English Language Academy maintains close ties with the general Rio Hondo campus community and works to ensure a smooth transition for students into college level instruction and programs.
