"I'm Going to College!" 2003-2004 Activities  Santa Fe Springs Education-Business-Community Partnership
Parent Meetings Six parent meetings are planned for the "I'm Going to College!" program in Santa Fe Springs.  They will be held in the middle schools of Little Lake and Los Nietos School Districts.  The meetings are geared to parents of children in the 6th grades attending Lake Center, Lakeside and Los Nietos Middle Schools.  The goal of having these parent meetings is to make sure that those parents begin to plan for their child's college education.  Topics to be discussed will include financial planning, the California college System and how to help their child develop good study habits.  Guest speakers have been invited for each meeting to share their expertise. Parents are also encouraged to network in order to learn about community and school resources that are available to them.
Student Visits to Colleges 6th grade students in Santa Fe Springs school districts will be taken on field trips to 2 and 4 year institutions during this academic year.  There they can interact with both students and faculty and be able to ask pertinent questions in order tobe able to make their career choices early.
College Boot Camp Due to the success of last year's College Boot Camp held at Rio Hondo College, students will again be given an opportunity to take courses at Rio Hondo as well as have an intensive week where they will  learn time management, test taking skills, goal setting strategies, etc. It is hoped that by exposing them early to a college environment they will realize the tools they need to develop to be successful there.
