WHO: ADN and VN nursing students in learning experience: simple to complex with guidance, immediate feedback and debriefing sessions using case studies integrated with theory content.
WHAT: SCLS creates active learning, engaging students in actual scenarios, and hands on experience integrated with theory course materials
- Shifts from teacher-centered to learner-centered
- Meets all learning needs of our student spopulation across the lifespan
- Incorporates multidimensional learning for visual, auditory and tactile learners
- Clinical hours to be no more than 25% of clinical lab hours as directed by the theory instructor (May change during crisis situations)
- Medical, surgical, pediatric, maternal/baby, and psychiatric scenarios – basic and advanced level
- Mistakes can be made without causing harm and analyzed for improvement
WHY: With high acuity patients, shortened hospital stays, and the nursing shortage, the clinical environment is incredibly stressful for students. This setting allows students to make mistakes, learn from them, and practice safe techniques in a decreased stressful setting. This offers students a teaching climate with performance evaluation within their comfort zone. (Laerdal, 2007)
WHERE: “Roadrunner Hospital” Room HS-11 or S-210
HOW: Students will receive objectives for the session, have a ten minute introduction, with roles identified and shift report given. The case scenario will unfold and students will function in their roles with a period of debriefing and remediation of the objectives to follow. The students will rotate the roles and gain competency and confidence as the case study is repeated and/or modified. SCLS will coordinate integrated SCLS experiences with the theory instructors.
If remediation is needed, students will be referred to Skills lab and tutoring.
OUTCOMES: after the simulated sessions, students will:
- Discuss problem solving skills, critical thinking and clinical reasoning
- Demonstrate decreased anxiety at the bedside
- Work as a collaborative team with improved communication and delegation skills
- Demonstrate understanding of the healthcare team at the bedside (RN, LVN, CNA, RT, MD)
- Verbalize understanding of family issues with patient care
- Perform appropriate decision making, bedside clinical judgment with increased self confidence
- Communicate clearly and effectively, including appropriate documentation
- Reflect on and analyze their own actions or failures to act
- Critique team effort and breakdowns in communication
