Your Student ID is your library card – you have that, you are all set to go.
Can I check out a book if I don’t have my Student ID with me?
A Student ID card is required to check out all materials, even those that are room use only. If you can’t just pick it off the shelf and use it, you will need your Student ID.
How long is the borrowing period?
Three (3) weeks for most books, music CD’s and other items (including the Circulating Videos in the stacks). There are some testing books that only go out for one (1) week.
Videos (VHS & DVD) from the Circulation desk are in-house use only – meaning they can not leave the Library floor – and are due at the latest when the Library closes.
Reserve Books are mostly in-house use only and go out for just two (2) hours. Afterwards, they need to be returned to the Circulation Desk. There are a handful of items the teacher have said may actually leave the Library for different lengths of time (usually 1, 3, or 7 days), but these are very rare and only for a couple of classes.
What are Reserve Books and how do I use them?
Reserve Books are books (and other items) held especially for specific classes. They are usually the text books (or some of the text books) for that class. They are kept behind the Circulation Desk and you can get them there.
You will need the following information to get a Reserve Book:
- Your Class ID number (Engl 101, Math 50, Soc 102, etc.) – all our Reserves are shelved by class ID, so we can’t even begin to look without this.
- The name of the book – some classes have only a single book, but others can have up to two shelves worth of them, so the name is very important.
- The author of the book – and some classes have several different books, all with the same name (Math courses, especially), so an author will help us find the right one.
- The edition of the book – not always needed, but some instructors only want you using a specific edition of the textbook.
Ask a staff member at the Circulation Desk for a Reserve Book and have the above information ready. Also have your Student ID. The staff member will find the book and check it out to you for your use (generally two hours, room-use only).
How do I renew a book?
You can do it over the phone if the item is not overdue. Call the Circulation Desk (562-908-3416) and have your student ID number available.
You can renew at the Circulation Desk anytime. If the book is on time, you only need your Student ID. If the book is overdue, however, you will need to bring it in with you and pay the fine before it can be renewed. Items can only be renewed once. After that, it must be returned and allowed to go back on the shelves before you can use it again. Also, if someone has placed a hold on the book, that item can not be renewed.
What if my books are overdue?
The overdue fines are 25 cents per day, per item. So if, for example, you have three items out that are overdue, your fines will increase a total of 75 cents per day until they are returned. The maximum late fine is $5.00 per item.
If your total fines exceed $10, you will not be able to check anything else out (including Reserves). Also if you have unpaid fines from the previous semester, you will not be able to check anything out the next semester until those fines are paid off.
Note that the Library only accepts cash or checks – no credit or debit cards can be used.
What if I lose a book?
You pay the cost of a book plus a $10 non-refundable processing fee. If you later find the book (within one year) and return it, we will refund you the cost of the book only.
How do I return a book or pay a fine when the library is closed?
Return books in the Library Book Drop. The Library book drop is located near the entrance to the LRC.
Contact the Circulation Department if you need to pay fines to unblock your record for registration:
- Monday – Friday 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.
- Call x 3416 (from an on campus phone)
- Call 562.908.3416 (all other phones)
If you leave a message please speak slowly and clearly. Be sure to include the following:
- Name, Student I.D. number & Phone number
Can I use a magazine or journal if I don’t have my Student ID with me?
Yes. Magazine and journals are for room use only and are already available in the stacks. However, if you need help finding online articles, or articles from back issues, check with a Librarian.
Why can’t I check out the books on the Reference shelves?
The books in Reference include specialized subject encyclopedias, atlases, gazetteers, statistical manuals, handbooks of various kinds, and indexes. Generally these kinds of works are only consulted for a short amount of time and need to be on hand at all times for everyone to use.
