How does
this system work?
For most students we have a system of quizzes
and tests that you must pass to receive credit
for the unit(s) that you have enrolled in.
You need to begin by looking at the syllabus
for the class you signed up for. It indicates
which sections are going to be covered on your
first quiz. Study those sections and when you
feel you know the material proceed to the
testing room and ask the grader for a quiz.
You must show a picture ID and indicate which
class you are enrolled in. Remember, you may
take a quiz or test up to 5 times. The
highest score will be recorded in the
computer. Only the tests are averaged to
calculate your grade. Mastery tests may be
taken any time during the semester before you
enroll in the next unit.
What
are Mastery Tests?
These are short tests (10 problems) that
indicate how well you can calculate without a
calculator. These are timed tests. You
cannot pass the unit without passing the
mastery tests. Relax, everyone has passes
these tests.

What happens after I take a quiz or test?
If you receive an 80% or better on a test, it
is your choice whether to see an instructor or
not. The advantage of seeing an instructor is
that you may receive partial credit and you
will receive an explanation of your errors.
If you do not receive 80%, then you are
required to see an instructor. If you cannot
see the instructor at the time, you may put
your paper on hold. When you see the
instructor she/he will explain your errors and
will assign you homework. When you have
finished your homework, return it to the clerk
at the grading station. Wait ‘til the
instructor calls your name. They will either
clear you or ask you for more work. You may
then try the test again.
If
you pass a quiz, it is your choice whether to
see an instructor or not. If you do not pass
a quiz, you are required to see an
instructor. If you cannot see the instructor
at that time, you may put your paper on hold.
When you see the instructor she/he will
explain your errors and then decide whether to
assign homework and have you move on or assign
homework and have you retake the quiz. Again
if you are assigned homework, please leave it
at the grader station when you are done and
wait until the instructor calls you. They
will either clear you to retake the quiz or
move on.
Can
I skip the quizzes and just take the tests?
No.

What
are the Proficiency Exams?
Occasionally we have students enroll in the
MSC who are proficient in many areas of a
class but did not test out of the class on the
assessment test. They may have been too slow
or they may need to review before being
tested. For these students, we have initiated
Proficiency Exams. If a student feels
strongly that they know all of the material
covered in a unit, they may elect to take a
Proficiency Exam on that unit. You have only
one chance on Proficiency Exams. In order to
pass, you must score at least 80% on each
chapter test from the unit. If you do not
pass, the Proficiency Exam counts as one of
your 5 tries that you are allowed for each
exam. Even if you pass the Proficiency Exam,
you are required to pass the Mastery Tests for
that unit.
How
much time do I have to spend in the MSC?
You need only be in the MSC for your quizzes
or tests. If you want to take advantage of
our tutoring, computer exercises or tapes, you
may spend additional time. You need to decide
how much help you need to learn the material.

How
many units do I sign up for?
The MSC recommends strongly that you sign up
for only one unit at a time. We can add
students until the withdrawal date.
Can I be dropped from this course?
Yes, at periodic intervals the Instructor of
Record may go through the student records. If
you are not on schedule (indicated on your
syllabus) she/he might drop you. This is to
protect your grade. If you are dropped, you
may continue to use our services and if you
finish the course this semester, you will be
added back into the class. If you are in any
danger of not finishing a unit it is your
responsibility to drop yourself from the
course.
Can
I fail this course?
Yes, you can fail the course if you do not
finish the course and you have not dropped by
the drop date. If you are in danger of not
finishing, please drop the course. We can
always re-enroll you if you finish the course
this semester.

What is the biggest problem taking a
self-paced course?
Our students tell us over and over again that
they did not succeed because they did not make
themselves come in and take quizzes and tests
in a timely manner. You may be your own worst
enemy. Set yourself a schedule and make
yourself stick to it!
