MATH 120        4 UNITS
FINITE MATHEMATICS

Prerequisite: Math 70 with a grade of "C" or better or appropriate skill level as determined by participation in the math placement process.
Advisory: Eligibility for English 101, Reading 101.
Transfers to: UC, CSU

This course is an introduction to the fundamentals of mathematics as applied to business and the social sciences. The course includes topics in sets, logic, networks, permutations, combinations, probability, matrices, and linear programming. Microcomputers are used for the matrix and linear programming units.

MATH 130     4 UNITS
STATISTICS
Prerequisite: Mathematics 70  with a grade of "C" or better or appropriate skill level as determined by participation in the math placement process.
Advisory : English 101, Reading 101
Transfers to: UC, CSU

This course emphasizes the use of statistical methods as applied to descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. While discussing descriptive statistics, the students learn to read, understand and present data in a well organized way, using frequency distributions, graphs, percentiles, measures of central tendency, measures of variability, correlation, and linear regression. While discussing inferential statistics, the students learn to make generalizations about a population based on a sample using probability and its laws and several parametric and non-parametric tests including t, chi-square, ANOVA and others

MATH 150 3 UNITS
LIBERAL ARTS MATHEMATICS
Prerequisite: Completion of Math 70  with a grade of "C" or better or appropriate skill level as determined by participation in the math placement process.
Advisory: Eligibility for English 101 and Reading 35.
Transfers to: CSU, UC

This is a survey course with selected topics from the history and development of arithmetic, patterns and inductive reasoning, set theory and deductive reasoning, the real number system, algebra, geometry, probability and statistics, and problem solving. (Hand calculators or computers will be used for selected topics).

COLLEGE ALGEBRA
Prerequisite: Completion of Mathematics 70  with a grade of "C" or better appropriate skill level as determined by participation in the math placement process.
Advisory: Completion of English 35 and Reading 23.

Topics covered include: exponents and radicals, factoring, the Binomial Theorem, solution of linear and quadratic equations and inequalities, identification of roots of polynomials and solutions of systems of equations and inequalities.

MATH 170   4 Units
ELEMENTS OF CALCULUS
Prerequisite: Mathematics 160 or Mathematics 165 with a grade of "C" or better or an appropriate skill level as determined by participation in the math placement process.
Advisory: Eligibility for English 101 and Reading 101.

This is a one-semester course in the fundamentals of calculus and its applications to the fields of business, economics, social sciences, biology, and technology. Course topics include limits, derivatives and integrals of polynomial, exponential, or logarithmic functions, and applications of derivatives and integrals.

MATH 175   3 Units
PLANE TRIGONOMETRY
Prerequisite: Mathematics 70 with a grade of "C" or better and Mathematics 60 with a grade of "C" or better or appropriate skill level as determined by participation in the math placement process.
Transfers to: CSU

This course is a study of the concepts of plane trigonometry using a functions approach. Included is a study of basic relations, functions, and transformations, as well as circular functions, trigonometric functions of angles, identities, inverse functions and equations, solutions of triangles, and complex numbers.

PRECALCULUS
Prerequisite: Mathematics 175 with a grade of "C" or better or appropriate skill level as determined by participation in the math placement process.
Advisory: Completion of English 35, eligibility for Reading 101

This course is designed to prepare the students for the study of calculus. It represents a comprehensive study of linear, quadratic, polynomial, exponential, logarithmic, rational, and circular functions. Inequalities, introductory analytical geometry, graphing, series, and vectors are also included. This course is recommended as a precalculus course for students with four years of high school mathematics.

MATH 190   4 Units
CALCULUS
Prerequisite: Mathematics 180 (Precalculus), with a grade of "C" or better or equivalent or appropriate skill level as determined by participation in the math placement process.

Calculus 190 is a semester course designed primarily for those students planning to pursue programs in the engineering, mathematics, computer science, and physical science areas. The course includes the topics of differentiation and an introduction to the definite integral. Functions, their derivatives and integrals, will be presented geometrically and numerically, as well as algebraically.

MATH 191 4 Units
CALCULUS
Prerequisite: Mathematics 190 (Calculus) with a grade of "C" or better.
Transfers to: UC (credit limit-see counselor), CSU

MATH 191 is a semester course which continues the study of calculus begun in MATH 190. Topics of the course include: several techniques of integration, improper integrals, antiderivatives, application of the definite integral, differential equations, and approximations using Taylor polynomials and series. This is the second course of the calculus sequence required of engineering, physics, and mathematics majors.

 

MATH 250  4 Units
CALCULUS
Prerequisite:
Mathematics 191 with a grade of "C" or better.
Transfers to: UC, CSU

This course involves a study of functions of two or more variables using the principles of calculus, vector analysis, and parametric equations. Included is a study of solid regions using partial differentiation, vector analysis, and multiple integration. This course also includes a study of vector calculus topics, such as line and surface integrals, Green’s Theorem, Stokes’ Theorem, and the Divergence Theorem. This is the third course of the calculus sequence required of engineering, physics, and mathematics majors.

LINEAR ALGEBRA
Prerequisite: Mathematics 191 with a grade of "C" or better.
Transfers to: UC, CSU

This course is an introductory study of linear algebra with applications to problems in the physical and social sciences. It includes a study of systems of linear equations, vector and matrix equations, matrix algebra, vector spaces, Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors, orthogonality, least squares, symmetric matrices and quadratic forms. This course is required of engineering, physics, computer science and mathematics majors.

This class is offered in the fall semester only.

MATH 270  4 Units
DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS
Prerequisite: Completion of Mathematics 250 with a grade of "C" or better.
Transfers to: UC, CSU

This course is a study of ordinary differential equations with applications to problems in the physical and social sciences. It includes a study of linear, second order, and systems of differential equations with an introduction to LaPlace transforms. This course is a continuation of Math 190, 191, 250 and is required of all Engineering, Physics, and Mathematics majors. This class is offered in the spring semester only.
