Rio Hondo College Reaches Out To Los Nietos
Youth
Whittier--As part of Rio Hondo Community College’s commitment
to pave a pathway of success for students in elementary, middle,
and high school the nationally rated Rio Hondo College men’s soccer
team hosted the youth of Los Nietos on the Rio Hondo campus on
Wednesday, February 1st.
Ranked 6th in the nation, the Roadrunners men’s soccer team lived
up to their name. The team was commended for their exemplary performance
this year at the regular meeting of the Board of Trustees.
Prior to the Board meeting, 15 Roadrunners shared the importance
of their college experience and the importance of sports at the
collegiate level with 55 youth and their families from the Los
Nietos community.
Rio Hondo has been working diligently through several partnership
programs, including Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for
Undergraduate Program (GEAR-UP) with El Monte schools, and the
California Partnership for Achieving Student Success (CAL PASS),
to familiarize youth with the college experience. “The children
who come to the dinner tonight are the Rio Hondo College of the
future—we are pleased to play a part in encouraging them to continue
their education,” said Board of Trustees President Gary Mendez.
“Community outreach is a core commitment of Rio Hondo College,”
said Mendez. “Meeting local soccer stars on the Rio Hondo College
campus inspires the young people of our community to think of
college as an attainable goal for their future.”
