Victims of poor officiating
By Robert Morales Staff Writer
Rio Hondo College,
after a gut-wrenching 3-2 loss to Santa Rosa last
month in the state men's soccer semifinals in
Fresno, was upset because it believed it had been
victim of poor officiating.
Said officiating, Roadrunners coach Orlando Brenes
believed, allowed Santa Rosa a free kick that
resulted in the game-winning goal in overtime.
However, Rio Hondo recently received some news that
made its season more than worthwhile. The
Roadrunners received a No. 6 national ranking in the
season-ending poll put out by the National Soccer
Coaches Association of America.
"This is the highest we've ever been ranked," Brenes
said. "It's a tremendous accomplishment for our
players and team, especially considering we're
talking the entire nation."
The Roadrunners finished 20-7-2 and registered
postseason upsets over Mt. San Antonio College and
L.A. Harbor.
Rio Hondo was led by, among others, Carlos Lopez,
Javier Delgadillo and Jeff Meyer.
Rio Hondo's women's basketball team is off to a
solid start after not having much recent success.
The Roadrunners are 12-7 overall, 1-1 in the
Foothill Conference heading into a game tonight at
home against Victor Valley College. Tip-off is 5
p.m.
Leading the way has been Kim Ramirez, a 5-foot-9
freshman out of St. Paul High School. She is
averaging 14.1 points and 14.1 rebounds.
Ramirez also is averaging 2.5 blocked shots and is
shooting 56.9 percent from the field.
But she is not alone. Ruby Catani is averaging 9.4
points and Elena Agabao and Crystal Fausto are
averaging 7.8 and 7.2 points, respectively.
