Boomers prepare to hatch nest eggs Rio
Hondo offers retirement advice
By Tracy Garcia Staff Writer
WHITTIER - Baby Boomers without retirement plans
will be able to enroll in a financial planning class being offered
this semester at Rio Hondo College.
The college is offering two sessions of the free
course "Maximizing Your Cash Flow and Increasing Your Financial
Leverage," aimed at helping Baby Boomers make informed financial
decisions while planning for their retirement.
The noncredit class will be taught by Pasadena financial
professional Craig Hover, who says most people want to plan for
the future but just don't know how to do it.
"In my experience, the majority of the Baby
Boom generation is nowhere near being financially ready for retirement,"
Hover said.
"Today's Boomers are more financially strapped
than ever," he added. "The typical family between ages
45 and 54 has less than $50,000 saved for retirement. (That's)
far short of the large financial nest egg many experts see as
necessary."
The class will focus on how to shift from a negative
financial state to a positive one, Rio Hondo officials said. That
includes discussions on beliefs about money, how to rise above
debt issues and take maximum control over your money.
It also will teach students how to leverage equity
for personal wealth, as well as where and how to invest in today's
world, officials said.
It does not, however, pitch any specific insurance,
annuities, estate planning or specific investments, officials
said.
The class' first session runs from Jan. 31 through
Feb. 2; the second session begins April 25 and goes to April 27.
"Baby Boomers are one of the largest populations
in our society, and it only behooves Rio Hondo to respond to their
needs," said the college's board of trustees President Gary
Mendez.
"Overall, we'd like to give this generation
some hope and guidance and relieve fears as they enter their golden
years," Mendez said.
