Rio Hondo College Presents the 30th Annual Regional Drafting
Contest
Whittier- Rio Hondo College will hold the 30th
Annual Drafting/Computer Aided Drafting & Design/Geographic
Information Systems Contest from March 15th thru 17th, 2006 at Rio
Hondo College, 3600 Workman Mill Road, Whittier. The contest
attracts more than 200 high school students from 20 local high
schools, including South El Monte, Whittier and Walnut. Awards will
be given to the winning students on Friday, March 17th at 1:30pm in
the college’s Wray Theater.
“Rio Hondo is well-known for offering high quality programs in
various technical education areas,” said Gary Mendez, President of
the Rio Hondo College Board of Trustees. “Our graduates easily
translate their Rio Hondo College education into fulfilling career
paths. This contest is just one more way the College reaches out to
the community to encourage higher education.”
One of the major goals of the event is to promote an interest in
Architecture and Engineering Design, while emphasizing the necessary
skills to secure future employment. Winners have gone on to study
architecture or engineering design drafting at Rio Hondo College,
and many have completed bachelor degrees at very prestigious public
and private four-year colleges.
The more than 500 Rio Hondo students currently enrolled in the
Architecture and Engineering Design Drafting Program receive a
comprehensive education focused on industry standards and develop
the professional skills required to enter the workforce. This year
the program will be adding Civil Drafting and Design to its
curriculum.
“The students who participate in this contest come from all over the
Valley to compete,” said Dr. Rose Marie Joyce, President of Rio
Hondo College. “But they attend Rio Hondo College because our
comprehensive curriculum provides them with a competitive edge for
the industry.”
The contestants may compete in any one of the following contests:
Basic Mechanical Drafting, Advanced Mechanical Drafting, Basic
Architectural Drawing, Advanced Architectural Drawing, Mechanical
CADD, Architectural CADD or Basic GIS. The design task is presented
to the participants on the day of the contest. Entrants must create
a design in three hours using
state-of-the-art equipment. All entries are anonymous to ensure
impartiality.
Each submission is judged by current Rio Hondo College students,
under the supervision of faculty from the Architecture and
Engineering Design Drafting Program. To memorialize their
achievement, winners will receive handsome plaques and prizes. The
prizes, made possible through the generous contributions of the Rio
Hondo’s Associated Student Body, the Rotary Club of Whittier, and
several book and software publishing companies, include advanced CAD
software, drafting tables, drafting tools and textbooks. For more
information on the contest, please contact Professor Jay Sunyogh,
