NEWS 2008

April 14- In difficult windy conditions at Antelope Valley CC, the Rio Hondo Golf team finished 3rd in the 6th conference match of the season shooting 389. Sophomore Frank Garcia led the team and was tied for tournament medalist with a solid 73 that included a 3-under par 33 on the front 9. Freshman Ahron Valverde was second with 75 and Nick Silva was right behind with 76. COD took the win at 376, with Long Beach just one ahead of Rio at 388.


 

March 31- Solid team play has been the norm this season as Rio Hondo once again posts great scores in the very competitive Foothill Conferernce. At Recreation Park GC Freshman Ahron Valverde shot 75 as Rio placed tied for 4th with Victor Valley. Long Beach won at 365, followed by Mt. SAC 384 and COD 388.


 

March 24- The Rio Golf team shot a season low 384 at the 4th conference tournament held at El Prado GC helping the team to a 4th place finish. Freshman Mitchel Yoshitake led the team with a 73, followed by Ahron Valverde and Nick Silva who shot 77. Mt. Sac won with a 367 followed by Desert 369 and Long Beach 375.


 

March 12- Rio Hondo Linksters Won a dual match against Santiago Conyon at El Prado GC 380-381, as Freshman Nick Silva fired a season best 72.


 

March 10- Freshman Ahron Valverde led the Roadrunners with a 79 at the 3rd Conference match held at Soboba Springs Golf Club, but it was not enough as the Roadrunners finished in 6th place with a team score of 407. Long Beach led with a 370. 


 

March 5- Rio Hondo slipped to a 4th place finish shooting 414 in the 2nd conference match of the season. The difficult Industry Hills Babe course held the Roadrunners back as Freshman Ahron Valverde led the team with 78. Mt. Sac was the low team with 399, followed by COD 400 and Long Beach 407.


 

Feb 25.- Rio Hondo Golf Team placed 3rd in the first Conference match of the season. The Roadrunners shot 385 as a team led by Sophomore John Park who scored 73 at the Spring Valley Lake GC. Freshman Ahron Valverde fired a 74, followed by Frank Garcia and Mitchel Yoshitake with 76 and 78 respectively. COD was first with 378 and Long Beach 2nd with 379. Victor Valley, Mt. Sac, MSJC, and AVCC placed behind Rio.

 

Men's Golf

Rio Hondo College is a member of the Foothill Conference, competing against College of the Desert, Mt. SJC, Victor Valley, and other top schools throughout the state. Tournaments take the Rio Hondo team to quality golf courses throughout the state such as Oak Valley, Glendora CC, The SCPGA Courses at Oak Valley, Desert Princess, Rio Bravo, and Rio Hondo's home golf course, Industry Hills Golf Course. Industry Hills is one of the top courses in the US and  is home to US Open qualifying and the LA Nissan Open qualifying.

Greg Puga walks the fairways of Augusta National GC.

Congratulations to Rio Hondo Golf Alumni GREG PUGA on his winning the 2000 USGA Mid-Amateur Championship. Greg's win earned him a spot in the 2001 MASTERS TOURNAMENT in Augusta Georgia.  Greg was a member of the Rio Hondo Golf Team in 1991& 92 and earned a golf scholarship to Cal State Dominguez Hills.
