Men's Wrestling - Fall 2007
New Head Coach Mike Tellez looks
forward to a good season.
December 8- Rio Hondo's wrestling team qualified two wrestlers for
the state championships this past weekend. Rick Bernal (125lbs) and Diego
Martinez (125lbs) both placed 4th at the southern California
championships. Diego Martinez had a great tournament losing a close match in
the semifinals 6-5 to the eventual state champion. Diego went on and
placed 4th in the state earning him All-American honors".
The Rio Hondo wrestling team won the Western State Conference
championship for the second year in a row. The following wrestlers were
named to the All Conference Team:
Rick Bernal (125lbs) 1st Team
Diego Martinez (149lbs) 1st Team
Billie Rivera (HWT) 2nd Team
Thomas Barajas (157lbs) Honorable Mention
Rio Hondo's wrestling team had three athletes named to the 2006 Academic
All-American team. Rick Bernal (125lbs), Marcelo Lopez (133lbs), and
Diego Martinez (141lbs). These wrestlers excelled on the mat as well as the
classroom."
NOV. 10- The wrestling team competed in the San Francisco State
wrestling tournament over the weekend. The tournament had twenty-one
colleges participating and Rio Hondo placed 8th. The Roadrunners had two
wrestlers place: Rick Bernal at 125lbs placed 2nd and Diego Martinez 149lbs
also placed 2nd. It was a very good showing for the team in such a
tough tournament.
SEPTEMBER 30- The Rio Hondo wrestling team competed in their first
tournament of year at Cerritos college and placed 5th. The Roadrunners have
a relatively young team but were able to have nine wrestlers place in the
tournament. Placing 2nd was Rick Bernal, placing 3rd was Diego
Martinez, placing 4th was Alex Carrico, Travis Patterson, Bernardo Flores
and Scire Dompe. Placing 5th was Oscar Martinez, Placing 6th was Thomas
Barajas and Travis Abeyta. Good start to the season wrestlers.

Western State Conference
The Rio Hondo Roadrunners belong to the Western State Conference. The WSC is consistently
one of the top wrestling conferences in the state. Along with Rio Hondo, this highly
competitive conference features teams from Bakersfield, Cuesta, Cypress, and
Moorpark.
