Rio Hondo College Wrestler named 2008 Pepsi Scholar Athlete of the Year

Diego Martinez was successful student-athlete academically and athletically while wrestling at Rio Hondo College during the 2006 and 2007 seasons.  Athletically he was a team Captain of the two-time Western State Conference Champion wrestling team (2006, 2007).  In 2007 he was a state place-winner and All-American.  He was awarded the Rio Hondo College Male Student-Athlete of the Year Award for 2007-08 while competing for Head Coach Mike Tellez.  “I coached Diego in high school and then at Rio Hondo, I have never had a harder worker in the classroom and on the mat,” said Tellez.

Diego took his total education very seriously which is evident in his 3.93 grade point average.  He was on the Honors list all four semesters at Rio Hondo and would volunteer time at the on campus tutoring center helping other students.  Diego was a two-time Academic All-American in wrestling (2006, 2007).  In 2008 he received the Jet Propulsion Lab Undergraduate Scholar Award as well as being awarded the Rio Hondo Outstanding Student Award in Physics.  A graduate of nearby Rosemead High School, Diego enjoys being a mentor in the community.  He is currently attending University of Southern California on a full academic scholarship in the Honors program pursuing mechanical engineering.

Congratulations to Diego for this outstanding accomplishment.
