Steve Johnson enters
his first season as the head coach for the Rio Hondo Women’s basketball program. He brings 16 years of
coaching experience at all three levels.
Prior to coming to Rio Hondo Coach Johnson served as an
assistant coach for the Long Beach City Women’s
basketball program for one season and served three
seasons as an Assistant Coach for the Cerritos Women’s
basketball program, as well as a part-time instructor in
the Physical Education department. While at Cerritos,
his major responsibility with the team was to coach the
defense which was ranked 9th in the state
under his tough defensive style. Johnson also was a
major contributor to the recruitment of players. He
worked very hard with the training and conditioning of
student athletes.
Coach Johnson’s
experience includes two seasons as the head varsity
coach at St. Lucy’s Priory High School, two
years as the second assistant coach at Cal
State Dominguez Hills for the men’s program and one
season as a part-time special assistant. Johnson was also a Head
coach in the Dino Smiley
Semi-Professional Drew League, which included current
and former NBA players, as well as top overseas and college
players. He was the second assistant for the women’s team at Cal State
Dominguez Hills and Johnson began his coaching career in 1993 with the
City of Rancho Cucamonga Youth Basketball League.
Johnson graduated from Alta Loma High and continued his
education at Chaffey College, where he
received an Associate of Arts degree in General
Education and Liberal Arts and Sciences. He then
transferred to Cal State Dominguez Hills, where he
earned a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education in 1998 and received his Master’s degree in Physical
Education/Sports Administration in 2006. He is an active
member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Johnson is
married to Celese Johnson and resides in Long Beach.

Assistant Coach
Edgar Medinilla
(1st Year)
Edgar Medinilla enters his first season as the assistant
coach for the Rio Hondo Women’s basketball program. He
spent the last nine years coaching boys and girls high
school basketball in the Los Angeles city section.
Culminating with winning the 2007, Los Angeles City
Division II Boys Championship.
His previous collegiate
coaching experience was that of the Women's Assistant
Coach at the California Institute of Technology. At
Caltech he had the opportunity to coach a few games in
the absence of the head coach. In 1999 he helped coach
the team to the schools best record in wins, as well as
having a player ranked 3rd overall in the nation in
rebounds.
