Jessica Ortiz and Sandra Rodriguez were both invited to represent the South All-Stars in the annual North vs South Showcase match played during the State Championship Final Four weekend at Consumes River College in Sacramento.  The top players from across the state converged at Consumers River to show their talent in front of numerous 4 years coaching staffs.

Ortiz led the South with a goal and assist and Rodriguez had a shutout in goal with their South squad gaining a 3-0 advantage during their 1st half of play.

9 Roadrunners Receive

All-Foothill Conference Honors 2011

2011 was the Year of the Roadrunner as nine players from Rio Hondo College are recognized as

All-Foothill Conference  Selection

RHC Goes On 11 Game Unbeaten Streak To Finish Season at 12-4-4

Roadrunners finished the season unbeaten in Foothill Conference play at home while going on an 11 game unbeaten streak which included 7 straight wins via shutout to end the season in 2nd place in the tough Foothill Conference, just 1 point out of 1st place.

The defensive wall was led by 5’10” sophomore goalkeeper Sandra Rodriguez (El Rancho) who had a 0.36 GA Average, which would have ranked her 4th in the State, with

central defender, co-captain sophomore Erika Garay  (Walnut HS) who helped the freshman defensive line of Marysol Flores (frosh-Downey HS), Jasmine Sanchez (frosh-Don Lugo HS) and Robin Serpas (frosh-Downey HS) lock down the defense.

More than 50% of the players got on the scoreboard during the season, led by Jessica Ortiz (soph-Narbonne/Cerritos College) and Alejandra Gonzalez (Bell Gardens HS) who tied with 8 goals each on the season.   Flores and Serpas as well as, Daisy Hernandez (El Rancho), Ingrid Osegueda (Rowland), Annabel Carillo ( CSU Dominguez), Heather Hernandez (Montebello HS) and Lily Gama (El Rancho/Cerritos College) had a goal or assist on the year.

RHC Travels To Antelope Valley For Final Game To Determine Conference Championship

The Roadrunner Women hit the road to Antelope Valley for the final game of the year, sitting in 2nd place, just 1 point out of 1st place.  Rio Hondo needs a win to clinch the Conference Title and automatic State Playoff birth.  The Roadrunners defeated AVC at home earlier in the season and battled hard for 90 minutes today, but left the field with a 1-1 tie to finish 8-1-3 in Foothill Conf. play and 12-4-4 overall.  Sophomore Annabel Carrillo (CSU Dominguez Hills) got the goal on a 25 yard blast to tie the match in the 2nd half.

2011 Fight Against Cancer Fundraiser Week!

The Roadrunners held their annual Fight Against Cancer Fundraiser from Oct 10-14 where they collect old cell phones, ipods and gaming devices, recycle them and donate the proceeds to the City of Hope Cancer Center in Duarte.

RHC also donned specially made pink jerseys for their match versus Antelope Valley College (12-1), to bring further attention to the fight against cancer.  Not only was the week a great fundraising success, the Roadrunners came out with a hard fought 1-0 victory over AVC moving the team into 2nd in Conference

Roadrunners Battle Their Way Into 1st Place RHC wins 6 straight!

Rio Hondo 10-4-1 welcomed Foothill Conference leader Chaffey College (12-2-1) to the friendly confines of RHC’s home field last Tuesday and with the help of sophomore Jessica Ortiz’s (San Pedro/Narbonne HS/Cerritos College) game winning goal in the 18th minute, moved into 1st place in Foothill Conference play with 5 games remaining.

It was an intensity filled match as the Roadrunners played some great soccer to keep high scoring Chaffey off the scoreboard.  Sophomore co-captain Heather Hernandez (Montebello HS) assisted the goal to Ortiz.  Sophomore goalkeeper Sandra Rodriguez (El Rancho HS) had 6 saves to get her 6th shutout victory on the season.

ROADRUNNERS BREAK 2010 STATE CHAMPION  SAN BERNARDINO VALLEY’S HOME WIN STREAK

RHC hit the road to play the defending 2010 California State Champions, San Bernardino Valley College (8-2-2), in a Foothill Conference matchup on October 7.  SBVC hadn’t lost a game at home since October of 2008, three years and over 25 games ago!

The Roadrunners were determined to make history and did just that. Just 12 minutes into the game freshman striker Alejandra Gonzalez  (Bell Gardens HS) took a shot that was blocked by a SBVC defender right onto the foot of Roadrunner midfielder Jessica Ortiz (San Pedro/Narbonne) who blasted a shot from 30 yards out into the upper corner of the goal to give Rio Hondo a 1-0 lead.

Freshman defenders, Jasmine Sanchez (Don Lugo HS), Marysol Flores (Downey HS), Daisy Hernandez (El Rancho HS), Robin Serpas (Downey HS) along with sophomore co-captain Erika Garay (Walnut HS) turned away the Valley attack each time they threatened.  Sophomore Goalkeeper, Sandra Rodriguez led the team for a well earned shutout in the match.

Rio Hondo Soccer Raises Money To Fight Cancer 2010!

The Roadrunners collected cell phones, ipods and other mobile devices to raise funds to donate to the City of Hope cancer center.  The team also wore special 'pink'  uniforms for their annual Fight Cancer fundraising game in 2010.  This is the 2nd year in a row the Women's Team has held a fundraiser to support the fight against cancer.  In the spring of 2010 they held a Blood Drive to support their Assistant Coach in her fight against cancer and collected over 60 pints of blood...according to one Red Cross worker, it was the most collected in a single day from one donation center.
