HEAD COACH: Teddi
Esko
Teddi
Esko is entering her sixth year as the
coach of the Rio Hondo women’s volleyball team. Esko, a native of
Long Beach
, graduated from
Woodrow
Wilson
High School
. While attending
Wilson
High School
, she participated on the varsity volleyball and soccer teams. She earned
all CIF first team honors, Moore League MVP and team MVP. Following high
school, Coach Esko earned a Division 1 scholarship to
Arkansas
State
University
. She played four years as an outside/right side hitter, helping her team
win two Sun Belt Conference Championships and a berth to the NCAA tournament.
Teddi earned a B.S.E. in Physical Education from ASU. After her collegiate
career, she attended California State University Dominguez Hills and obtained a
Masters Degree in Administration and Physical Education. Coach Esko came
to Rio Hondo after coaching for both the Boys and Girls Volleyball Programs at
Magnolia
High School
in
Anaheim
. Coach Esko, along with her sister Coach Lesli Washington started the
first boys’ volleyball program at
Magnolia
High School
in 2002. In the Spring of 2005, Coach Esko and Coach
Washington
led the Magnolia Boys Team to their first ever
Orange
league championship and to the second round of CIF Playoffs. They
continued that success in the 2006 season.
Esko
was the Assistant Director for Club Beach Junior Girl’s Volleyball Club in
Long Beach
for 4 years. And also worked for the City of Long Beach Parks,
Recreation, & Marine Department in the Sports Office coordinating Adult
Volleyball Leagues and was the head beach volleyball instructor for six years.
Coach Esko has 20 years of volleyball experience, playing, coaching, instructing
and coordinating.

Coach
Esko is married to Paul Esko, a former volleyball player at
Ohio
State
University
. The Eskos have two children. She coaches against her father Larry
Chowen (former volleyball player at
Long Beach
State
), who is the head women’s volleyball coach at
Chaffey
College
. Teddi still actively participates in volleyball, playing in indoor
leagues, grass and beach tournaments and resides in
Huntington Beach
.
ASSISTANT COACH: Richard Huynh
Richard
Huynh is entering his second year as the assistant coach of the Rio Hondo
Women’s Volleyball team. Before coming to Rio Hondo, Huynh was an assistant
volleyball coach at
East Los Angeles
College
from 2002-2004. At ELAC, Huynh’s primary responsibilities
included recruiting, game and practice preparation, scouting and training
positional players. In the three years Huynh was an assistant coach, ELAC
finished with more wins in school’s history in over 10 years.
Huynh
also coaches the top 18’s team for the Starlings Organization in San Gabriel.
In 2007, Huynh lead his 16-1 team to finishing first place, earning the
gold medal at the annual Starlings National Tournament, which had teams from all
over the nation compete in a four day tournament. In 2008, Huynh’s 18 team
finished fourth overall at the Starlings National Tournament.
Huynh’s
college coaching career started when he was a volunteer coach at Cal State LA
from 1998-2001. During the time Huynh was at Cal State LA, the team earned
conference titles in 1999 and 2000, while going undefeated in 2000 with a 30-0
finish.
Huynh
started his coaching career at the high school level, coaching his alma mater
Alhambra High School. Huynh help started the boys’ volleyball team at Alhambra
and within the second year of the program, Huynh lead his boy’s team to a
second round CIF Southern Section finish. Other high schools that Huynh has
coached are Montebello, La Puente, Whitney, West Covina and Blair IB Magnet. At
West Covina, Huynh lead his team to a second place finish at the El Monte
Tournament in 2002 and having two of his athlete be named in the All-tournament
team. Huynh was recognized for his success in the Pasadena Star News in 2006,
after leading his Blair’s team to a 5-0 start and finishing with one of the
school’s best record in history. At Whitney, Huynh lead his boys’ volleyball
team to a second round CIF finish while once again establishing one of the
school’s best record.
Huynh
graduated in 2001 at Cal State LA with a B.A. in Child Development with a
Multiple Subject Teaching Credential Option. Huynh is currently working on
obtaining a Master’s degree in Coaching and Administration.
