4 Faculty Online Professional Development –  Interested in enhancing your skills as an instructor but have a hard time finding the time to attend workshops?  Rio Hondo will continue to sponsor access for all Faculty and Staff to use www.4faculty.org.  This online, self-paced tutorial system created specifically for California Community College faculty is a fantastic resource on a wide-range of topics such as creating syllabi, understanding community college students, learning theory, teaching methodology, and classroom management.  Although originally designed for part-time and new community college faculty, all are invited to utilize this system.  Earn up to 24 hours of FLEX!

Support for Low Cost Trainings/Conferences! – Interested in a low cost conference or training (i.e. @One Institute) but not the paperwork of a more costly grant?  Staff Development has set aside $1000 Spring 2008 to reimburse local training/conference attendance.  

Maximum Award:                    $200.00

Application Process:                Prior to the event, submit an approved travel requisition and a brief statement to Staff Development describing how this activity will improve your professional skills. If approved, fill out required paperwork for reimbursement within 30 days.

 

CAUGHT in the ACT of Excellence – Have you witnessed a colleague doing something extraordinary for a student, a fellow staff person, or the campus in general?  Send your stories (who, what, where, and when) to Katie O’Brien in Staff Development so that we can all recognize the excellence that takes place at Rio on a daily basis.

All Staff Workshop: "The Healthy Home Workshop" -Is your home a Healthy Home?  Discover how common household chemicals may gradually be making you and your family sick and why your children are at an even higher risk.  As John Beaulieu has stated, “Scientists and doctors are discovering that there is a connection between our increased incidence of chronic illnesses like cancer, asthma, ADD, nervous disorders, birth defects, infertility, and a host of other problems.” Which products, which chemicals? Presenter Kristen Garwood will  discuss cleaning and personal care products and how exposure through ingestion, inhalation and absorption can have long and short-term effects on you and your family's health.  RSVP to Diana Gutierrez @ dgutierrez@riohondo.edu by April 9th. R & R (Reflection & Renewal) Group- Could your professional spirit use a lift?  Consider joining an ongoing series of gatherings with colleagues to spend time focused on reconnecting the best of who you are with what you do.  We will meet 3 times locally throughout the semester.  Sessions will use tools such as film, music, poetry, individual and small group reflection to encourage reflection and how to bring our best selves to our work. Participants are encouraged to make plans to attend all 3 meetings in their entirety.

Classified Staff Workshop - "Windows Vista"  - Examine the various changes and new interface components of the Windows Vista environment. Use new Windows Vista™ functions to search for folders and files. Work with the new organizational and productivity tools and applications provided in Windows Vista™.Share data and collaborate with other users using the networking and sharing options of Windows Vista™.Enhance system performance by using several features provided by Vista. Classified Staff Workshop - "Outlook 2003" - Microsoft Outlook is the e-mail application used by the majority of businesses also providing calendar, task, and contact management features.  The possible topics are creating & sending messages, using attachments, working with contacts, creating folders, working with multiple attachments, using the calendaring feature of Outlook. Within Outlook, personalizing emails by using stationery and signatures, and using contacts to share, link and communicate information. RSVP to Gabriela Olmos @ golmos@riohond.edu by April 16th. All Staff Workshop - "Stress Management" - This training presented by Kathy Espinoza, will help you realize the toll that stress is taking on your body, how to recognize signs of stress, how you typically react to them and offer you practical tips at handling life better.  Stress will always be a part of our lives.  Learn how to tame the “Stress Beast” within. All Staff Retreat: "Celebrate Us!" –  Join your colleagues to celebrate the hard work and accomplishments of the campus community this year.  Highlights of the day will include a "Festival of Achievements," a BBQ, and teambuilding activities with a focus on current campus issues. Attendees will be asked to make a $5.00 contribution to fund the Social Gathering. RSVP to Alice Tirre by April 16th.

FLEX Obligation Deadline May 1st! – Remember all full time and part-time faculty need to have provided the FLEX office with documentation of having completed their FLEX obligation for the 2007-2008 year by Tuesday, May 1st.  While it is fine to project out activities until June 30th of 2008, to avoid a reduction in your final paycheck, documentation of all completed and projected activities must be received by the FLEX office by this deadline.  Self-Documentation forms and pre-approved FLEX activity lists are available at http://www.riohondo.edu/staffdev/FLEX.htm and http://www.riohondo.edu/staffdev/FLEXDivActivities/index.htm respectively.

Women Hold Up Half the Sky “ Staff Development is pleased to fund registration for up to 10 staff members to attend this annual American Association of Community College Women Conference entitled “The Journey Continues: Planning Today for a Successful Tomorrow”  The first 10 staff who indicate an interest and hand in a completed Travel Authorization (with a supervisor and Vice-President’s signature) to the Staff Development office will receive funding.  The deadline to hand in your request is Wednesday, April 23rd.  If you'd like to ride in a college van to the event, contact Sylvia Viramontes @ sviramontes@riohondo.edu. MySpace for Parents: A Guide to Internet Safety -  Keep your kids cyber-safe in today’s world.
In this workshop you will learn the latest techniques for protecting your children online.   The information provided in this workshop will get you up-to-date on warning signs and learning how predators operate. Find out how to keep private information off the Internet and what tools and
software are available for helping parents, grandparents or guardians.

 Presenter Bob Cohen has over 25 years experience in high-technology computer security and safety.  Mr. Cohen is the author of Cyber Safety-Internet Safety and Security for Parents and Other PC Users.
