The Student Leadership Institute (SLI) at Rio Hondo College is a non-credit certificate program in partnership with California State University, Fullerton (CSUF). Students who participate acquire and develop the skills and awareness necessary to become an effective leader on campus, in the community, and in their future career. They learn the value of networking, gain effective communication skills, enhance their confidence, define their leadership style, and engage in co-curricular activities that augment their academic learning. Students who successfully complete the program earn a leadership certificate signed by the CSUF college president, a very marketable tool on a resume and on transfer applications.
SLI Students are required to attend a series of workshops which will earn them a leadership certificate from CSUF upon program completion. Participation in SLI is free of charge and open to all RHC students. There are no minimum requirements for units enrolled, grade point average, or prior leadership experience for program participation.
Level 1 Certificate: University Leadership
Workshops are offered through three (3) mandatory conferences and will end with a mandatory Service Learning Day and Reflection Essay. There are 100 seats in the program, and students are given program acceptance on a first come basis. Students who apply and attend a mandatory orientation are given priority. ASRHC and Student Ambassador students are also given priority in the program.
Level 2 Certificate: Organizational Leadership
Workshops are offered through two (2) seminars and will include a mandatory Service Learning Day and journal reflections. There are 20 seats in the program, and students will be selected on a first come basis. ASRHC and Student Ambassador students are also given priority in the program. You are required to successfully complete the Level 1 Certificate before applying to the Level 2 Certificate.
SLI Coordinating Committee (SLICC)
SLICC Team Members are a group of Level 1 Certificate graduates who use their knowledge to help mentor the next group of Level 1 students through their program experience. They assist with the planning and preparation of the conferences to ensure their SLI Level 1 mentees have the best possible experience. The SLICC Team Members have weekly meetings on Fridays with Student Life & Leadership Staff to get additional training. You are required to successfully complete the Level 1 Certificate before applying to the SLICC Team.
To apply to the Student Leadership Institute
1) Complete the online application or a hard copy application from the Student Life & Leadership Department in the Student Union Second Floor SU-201 when it becomes available.
2) Level 1 applicants must attend a mandatory Leadership Orientation which takes place within the first month of each fall semester. Leadership Orientations will provide information on conference schedules and program details. Level 2 and SLICC applicants do not need to attend an orientation.
