The following are some suggestions for making the transition easier.

  • Take college basic skills assessment.
Find out which basic skill areas you need to refresh so that you can feel confident about handling college coursework. Visit the Assessment Center website www.riohondo.edu/admissions/assessment/ .
  • Work closely with a counselor either in the Counseling Department or the Career Development Center.
Your time and money are precious. A counselor can identify goals and make recommendations that keep you focused and on track to reach those goals.
  • Utilize Career Development Center resources and activities.
The Career Development Center hosts many workshops, special programs and industry field trips that are a cost-effective and created in an interesting way for you to get connected and informed.
  • Meet with your instructors during their office hours.
Instructor office hours are often underutilized so take advantage of this opportunity to share concerns or seek extra assistance regarding coursework.

Attending college as a mature student changes one’s focus about the learning experience. It’s very likely that you will find it to be a much more positive and engaging process than in your younger days. Enjoy!
