Rio Hondo College offers all courses required by the State of California to be eligible for the Smog Technician License exam. Rio Hondo also offers all Licensed Smog Check Technician required training classes, including License Renewal courses, Update Training courses, and Citation Training courses. These courses can also lead to a Certificate and to a Two-year Degree. Topics covered include the following:

The State of California requires a Licensed Smog Check Technician to have a number of high-level skills and knowledge. They use extensive high-tech knowledge and skills regarding the proper operation of the internal combustion engine every day on the job. They also use effective communication skills every day, including reading, writing, and verbal tasks. A Licensed Smog Check Technician typically performs the following job skills:

• Correctly identify vehicle systems and components
• Correctly enter vehicle and customer data on paper and in a computer system
• Effectively communicate with customers, employers, and fellow employees
• Effectively use printed and computer-based data information systems
• Perform required engine performance and emissions system tests in a safe manner
• Perform required engine and emissions systems diagnosis procedures in a safe manner
• Correctly interface with vehicle computer systems using PC-based software, laptops, and scan tools
