Fun Stuff – Student Involvement
in Clubs
Rio Hondo College has several
campus clubs which promote student involvement. These clubs
enable students to benefit from others in the field such as
advisors, professionals, and other students or recent graduates.
The club activities add to the student’s classroom experience
with industry exposure and fun activities like picnics, fund
raisers, and trips to well known landmarks.
A.S.E.A.,
SKILLS
USA / V.I.C.A., and Rotaract
are examples of such clubs and have been a successful and valuable
part of the Architectural and Engineering Design Drawing and
CADD Program for the past 20 years. Each of the three clubs
have a distinct purpose. A student involved in one of these
clubs generally participates in the activities of all three.
A.S.E.A
– American Society of Engineers
and Architects at Rio Hondo College is a student chapter of
the professional organization or chapter based in South Pasadena.
Students are involved with presentations and visitations presented
and hosted by professional Engineers and Architects. The club
meets bimonthly on campus and every two month off campus at
either a project site, presentation, or another college. Each
college chapter of ASEA hosts an activity once a year inviting
other college chapters to participate. Rio Hondo College’s
ASEA chapter each year in December hosts the toothpick contest
designing and building bridges, towers, or planes. Off campus
job site visitations enable students to see current engineering
or architectural projects or visit an industry facility.

SKILLS
USA / V.I.C.A.– SKILLS
USA / V.I.C.A. at Rio Hondo College is a student chapter of
a state and national leadership organization for education.
SKILLS USA / V.I.C.A. promotes developing well rounded skilled

One element with SKILLS USA / V.I.C.A. that students in the

of training such as Architectural and Technical Drawing and
CADD. Students compete at regional, state, and national levels
with gold medal winners advancing to the next level. During
the past 20 years the program has enjoyed many student winners:
two national gold medallists, two national silver medallists,
two national bronze medallists, up state gold and silver medallists,
mutiple and numerous regional medallists.
Rotaract
– The local Rotary Club
of Whittier sponsors the college chapter called Rotaract. Rotaract
is a service club of organization designed to help others in
need with the community. Students involved in Rotaract participate
in fund raisers and department or program recruiting efforts
such as the annual High School Technology Contest. Rotaract
Club members help host over 300 students from 25 different high
school as they compete in seven categories of architectural,
technical, and CAD drawing. This contest has been an annual
event for the last 19 years. |
