Welcome to Rio Hondo College GIS

Rio Hondo GIS Drafting Program

GIS this Summer!
register early is very important

The Rio Hondo College GIS CAD program is now offering an Introduction to GIS online class and also new is the initiation of the new Civil Engineering Program. The Rio Hondo College technology program supports the innovative use of technology for students (including staff & faculty), more specifically: Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

GIS is a powerful, very marketable tool that allows information to be displayed to a location, such as people to an address, crime to a demographic area, species to a slope and aspect then analyzed spatially combining critical thinking and problem solving by layering other information to give a better understanding of why certain populations vote, spend or where species can be found. Classic examples include spatially displaying information for environmental analysis, analyzing social demographic & voting patterns, or geographically displaying spending habits such as where are more populations likely to purchase the Washington Post to where there are more concentrations of poverty, or analyzing pollutions within delineated watershed.

May 15th, Gov. Schwarzenegger emphasizes the importance of GIS at a Conference on California’s Future

Most agencies are using or moving towards utilizing GIS. At the same time, Increasingly more universities including faculty in different departments and administrators will be using GIS in their courses and research. The GeoSpatial industry is growing in the marketplace, commercially 100% each year .. and the users 35% each year. See links within the pages for more facts and information on the GIS industry.

We invite you to join us each semester, attend annual GIS workshops or drop in to explore applications in your area of interest. For more information, contact GIS faculty, Warren Roberts at wroberts@riohondo.edu
