14 tips to increase student interaction and learning in your
online discussions
One of the ways that technology is expanding opportunity for
learning is by extending the classroom through online
discussion. Asynchronous discussions do not occur in "real
time" but are more like bulletin boards to which comments
and questions can be added by participants over time. Most
of the suggestions presented on this web site are for
asynchronous discussions, though many are also useful for
synchronous forums as well. Here are fourteen tips to
increase student interaction and learning in your online

50 Alternatives to Lecture (for online or distributed
courses)
The motivation to find alternatives to online lecture
is pretty obvious. Lecture alone does not work very well as
an instructional strategy for a variety of reasons. This is
true in the traditional classroom but is especially apparent
in online courses where onscreen reading can be very tedious
and recorded lecture hogs bandwidth without necessarily
adding any value. In any case, recent views of instructional
"best practice" focus on a more student centered and
participatory model of teaching and learning.
22 Ways to handle technology enhanced cheating
Using the internet for teaching and learning often brings up
the question of cheating. A common concern voiced by faculty
is "How do I know that my students are doing the work?"
While this question frequently arises in completely online
courses, the existence of a variety of "cheat sites" (sites
where students can download term papers etc.) on the
internet may cause concern in traditional and web enhanced
courses as well. The information that follows may be useful
to readers interested in deterring "technology enhanced
academic dishonesty".
