Q: Why am I unable to login to my course?
A: Access will only be available on the day your class officially begins to students officially registered through Admissions & Records.  If you added a class on or after the official start date, there will be a 2-business day delay before your pre-assigned  WebCT Username & Password is created.

Every semester, new Usernames & Passwords are assigned to all students. Always read the logon instructions under the Username & Password link to the right.

NOTE:  AJ, Corrections, & FireTech students access online classes through the Public Safety Site at http://leo.riohondo.edu

Q: When I login to my course at work, it gives me this error "Cannot find server or DNS Error" even though my Username and Password worked fine, what is going on?
A: Many employers and companies set up firewalls as security measures against hackers. Firewalls provide security by closing certain Internet ports, which disables student access to interactive computer applications like WebCT.  In cases where students have been given permission to complete school work at their place of employment, employers have requested the port numbers required to modify their network and provide their employees with greater Internet access. Here are the ports that need to be opened:

WebCT Ports for Fall 2004

WebCT Port: (TCP) 8900
Chat Port: (TCP) 4447

Whiteboard Port (TCP):

4569

Q: I'm trying to login to WebCT but it keeps trying to download "homearea.exe"?
A: Although WebCT is a web-based program, it is still executable. Your Netzip Download Demon is attempting to download the homearea.exe which is not a downloadable file.

You have two options for addressing the Netzip Download Demon problem:

Option 1 - Uninstall Netzip Download Demon.
Option 2 - Configure Netzip Download Demon in order to disable it while you are online with WebCT.

Netscape Smart Download is another program that may be attempting to download homearea.exe. If you disable this program, you should be able to access your class.

Q: I logged into my course and its asking me for a Course Access Code, what is this?
A: The instructor of your course may have selected a textbook publisher that requires an access code. To obtain full access to the course, you must first purchase and register your Access Code. Access codes are not Login ID's, User ID's, WebCT ID's, Global ID's, Usernames, or Passwords. If you did not receive an Access Code with your text, you may purchase an access code online.

Q: I'm trying to take my Quiz but it won't appear, I keep clicking on it but nothing happens?
A: If you have installed a pop-up disabling program, you must disable it when using WebCT. You will be unable to access quizzes while your pop-up disabling program is enabled.

These applications work in the background while you browse the internet. When they detect a pop-up window that may be an unwanted advertisement, they automatically close the window. Unfortunately, they also inhibit WebCT from performing properly. If you are unable to view Discussion postings, Quiz windows, and download links, then search your hard drive for any software with "pop-up" in the name and disable it.

Note: Norton Internet Security 2003 has an automatic ad-blocking setting that must be disabled for WebCT to perform properly. Please disable this function within Norton.

Some popular pop-up killers include:

:: Pop-Up Stopper
:: Pop-Up Defender
:: Pop-Up Zapper
