Rio Hondo College Foundation hosts event for scholarships and student programs
Whittier – A festive evening of delicious food, wine tasting, and drawings are in store for the Rio Hondo College Foundation’s A Taste of Rio event tonight, May 2 beginning at 6 p.m.
A fundraiser to support student scholarships and programs, A Taste of Rio will feature cuisine from 17 eateries, as well as spectacular opportunity drawing items.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to learn about Rio Hondo College students, their struggles and their perseverance through the “Faces of Rio” display that showcases four students and their inspiring stories of immigration and assimilation, overcoming obstacles in the face of adversity, and re-entering the education system.
“Our ‘Faces of Rio’ students represent all of our students who all have the other similar stories,” said Rio Hondo College Superintendent/President Teresa Dreyfuss. “By hosting A Taste of Rio, we are remaining true to Rio Hondo College’s mission of being committed to the success of our diverse students and communities.”
The first Taste of Rio in 2012 featured tastings from 13 restaurants and netted funds that went toward programs committed to educational excellence and access.
“A Taste of Rio is more than just another community fundraiser,” said Rio Hondo College Executive Director Howard Kummerman. “A Taste of Rio, at its core, is about supporting students and what we as a community can do to facilitate their success.”
