Police

The Police Major focuses on law enforcement, exercising judgement, and detecting and preventing crimes. Rio Hondo offers a Police Academy for their High Unit Certificates as well as other Low Unit Certificates under Corrections, Investigations, and Parole. The High Unit Police Academy Certificates goes over 42 Learning Domains and meets certification requirements of the Commmision on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) as well as Basic Law Enforcement Academy Training requirements. Rio Hondo houses a Regional Training Center, Firearms Range, and is located in front of Nike Hill for additional physical training. For the student interested in the becoming a law enforcer and joining the Police Academy will have to complete prerequisites under a pre-Police major such as Administration of Justice, Corrections, etc. This certificate can prepare the student for a multitude of career paths such as…

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES (SLO)

  • Apply the definitions, concepts, statutes, and constitutional principles covered in the POST Learning Domains to law enforcement work.
  • Given scripted scenarios, demonstrate proficiency in handling situations involving a variety of law enforcement related incidents
  • Analyze ethical dilemmas encounterd in law enforcement and decide on the correct ethical choice
  • Demonstrate self- defense skills in a safe and proficient manner
  • Demonstrate firearms skills in a safe and proficient manner
  • Demonstrate emergency vehicle operations in a safe and proficient manner
  • Prepare an accurate and complete arrest report that meets the requirements of law enforcement agencies
  • Use the certificate as a platform for a career as a peace officer
