The Communications and Languages Campus Event Series explores and celebrates core disciplinary aspects of the C&L Division through large-scale, community-based gatherings. 

The annual program spans across the academic year and consists of the following events:

  • The Foreign Film Festival is an annual event organized by the Languages Department to encourage second language learning and cultural pluralism. Chinese, French, Spanish, and Latin-American films are typically shown in the Wray Theater with corresponding faculty members providing historical context and follow-up discussion. The Foreign Film Festival is open to the community and particularly relevant among students enrolled in language coursework or programs of study.
  • The Forensics Showcase is a yearly program featuring student presentations in multiple formats, including oral interpretation, impromptu speaking, and parliamentary debate, among others.  An invited keynote speaker or guest moderator typically provides formal remarks regarding a specific program theme. The Forensics Showcase is held in the Wray Theater and open to the community.
  • The Mass Communications Fall Lecture brings accomplished industry professionals to campus to interact with members of Rio Hondo student media programs. Event details include a lecture presentation, newsroom tour, working session, and meet-and-greet exchanges.  It is aimed at providing students pursuing academic pathways in mass communications with key industry perspective and networking opportunities.
  • The Reading Festival is an annual celebration of literacy at all levels hosted by the Reading Department in collaboration with the Library. Program components include guest presentations, storybook narrations, quiet reading areas, arts-and-crafts activities, book vendors, food, games, and prizes. The Reading Festival promotes lifelong literacy throughout the campus community and among local families for personal and academic enrichment.
  • The Writes of Spring is an annual two-day celebration of writers and writing, featuring performances by guest writers, students, and faculty across various genres and literary forms. The event is held in the Wray Theater, open to the community, and comprised of multiple program sessions.
