Health and wellness at Río Hondo

The Student Health and Wellness Program aims to foster student well-being by reducing the stigma surrounding mental health, encouraging help-seeking behaviors, and offering peer-to-peer support groups for vulnerable and high-risk populations, including veterans, students with disabilities, and LGBTQ+ students. At Río Hondo College, we take a proactive approach, emphasizing early intervention strategies to address students’ mental health needs. By equipping students with tools to overcome psychological barriers that hinder academic success and personal well-being, the program contributes to a safe, supportive campus environment and promotes increased student retention. Here are some of the programs and information we offer.

Student Health Center

The Student Health Center provides a wide range of medical and mental health services to all students who pay the health fee. Dedicated to supporting your well-being and academic success, the center offers services both online and in person for your convenience.

Health insurance information

The student health fee paid during enrollment grants students free access to most services provided by the Student Health Services Office.

As of January 1, 2014, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) introduced new health insurance options. Everyone is required to have health coverage, which can be obtained through a parent or spouse, an employer, Medi-Cal, state health programs, or the Health Insurance Marketplace. Those without health coverage may face a penalty.

Psychological Services

Psychological Services is here to support your mental health and academic success. Our team includes a full-time Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Glenn Heap, and five Marriage & Family Therapist Trainees who provide short-term counseling.

Students can receive confidential support for challenges like stress, anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, relationship issues, gender and sexuality exploration, life transitions, and more. Individual and group sessions are available to help you navigate life’s complexities and find moments of peace and growth.

Support groups

Río Hondo College offers a variety of support groups to assist students with different needs. These include Walk & Talk Wednesdays (open to all students), Cuz, I Love You for Pride Scholars, Together, We Grow for RISE Scholars, Parent-to-Parent for parent students, Resilience for students with foster care experience, Coping and Connecting for those managing anxiety and depression, UndocuTalks for UndocuScholars, Black Minds Matter for Black Scholars, Vets with Glenn for veterans, and Broad Horizons for DSPS students. Meetings are held in SS-107 with hybrid options available. For more details, contact the Student Health Center or the specific group leaders.

Student health magazine

Student Health 101 magazine provides Río Hondo College students with an anonymous platform to explore the health and wellness topics most relevant on campus. Using LiveMagazine technology, it delivers interactive content that engages students and keeps them interested. Written for students—and often by students—Student Health 101 fosters a deeper connection with the content, making it more relatable and accessible.
