The Vocational Nursing Program is a two-semester program, following the completion of prerequisite courses. It is designed to prepare students for employment as a Vocational Nurse, giving care to patients in a variety of settings, such as acute hospitals, extended care facilities, home health care, surgical centers, and medical offices. The program is accredited by the California State Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians. Students who complete the curriculum, and achieve the career certificate, are qualified to apply for the examination leading to licensure as a Licensed Vocational Nurse.
Before applying, prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade “C” with an overall College GPA of 2.5 or better.

Educational requirements for program application –
Proof of graduation from an accredited high school in the U.S.A. by transcript, diploma, or official international evaluation; or Associate or Baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution of higher education in the U.S.A.; or documentation of passing score on the GED (General Education Development) exam.
Students must meet the admission requirements and pass all academic courses with a grade “C” or better. Completion of Reading 23, English 35, Math 30, or equivalent, with a grade “C” or better or exemption through assessment testing.
If you graduated from high school and/or college in another country, please have your transcripts evaluated by a private International Evaluation Service. Official documents should be sent to Rio Hondo College Admissions and Records Office.
Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians requires a valid social security number for licensure. The Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians should be consulted for qualifications for licensure for legal residents without social security cards. How to Apply:
- Apply to Rio Hondo College to obtain Student Identification Number (ID).
- Submit All official Transcripts to Admissions and Records. All transcripts must be sent directly from college to college.
- Submit Nursing Application to the Health Science and Nursing Division (S206), along with required documentation from the nursing checklist by the deadline date. click here for nursing application
- Transcripts from another country must be evaluated from a NACES approved agency and sent directed to Admissions and Records by the company.

The Vocational Nursing Program uses a random selection process for all applicants meeting the requirements, which include the following;
High school Diploma, GED or equivalent. (attach copy of diploma, transcripts, or copy of certificate with VN application
All college transcripts sent directly to RHC Admission and Records office, by previous colleges or institutions attended.
Health Science Core 60 (or Anatomy w/Lab) Note – 7 year recency on course
Psychology 101 (General or Introduction) Note – 7 year recency on course
Basic Skills in Math, Reading and English (or Assessment score exemptions or equivalent course completed, or Associate Degree or higher)
