Rio Hondo College has partnered with the Whittier Union High School District to offer a free dual-enrollment program that allows students from all seven Whittier Union high schools to earn UC- and CSU-transferable credits while completing their regular coursework. Beginning in 9th grade, students can take one college course each semester — plus summer offerings — enabling them to earn up to 30 college credits before graduation.
Funded by nearly $1 million in California Department of Education grants (CCAP and MCEC), the program is taught entirely by Rio Hondo College professors and includes waived tuition and free textbooks. Students are encouraged to pursue courses aligned with Rio Hondo’s Honors Transfer Program, which supports students — particularly underrepresented and at-promise learners — in transferring to competitive UC campuses within two years.
Whittier Union alumna Chloe Carrancho shared her positive experience transitioning from high school to Rio Hondo College, highlighting the program’s flexibility, supportive environment, and strong transfer pathways.
