Río Hondo College Earns Prestigious Spots in Hispanic Outlook on Education Magazine’s Rankings

Posted on November 28, 2023 by rhc | Category: Press Releases

Whittier, California – Río Hondo College’s rigorous academic programs and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion have resulted in high rankings in the Hispanic Outlook on Education Magazine’s Top 100 Colleges and Universities for Hispanics list.

Each year, the Hispanic Outlook on Education Magazine releases its Top 100 list based on the latest data from the federal NCES Integrated Post-Secondary Education System. Using information from the 2021-22 school year, Río Hondo College ranked 25th among both two-year and four-year institutions with a total enrollment of 17,677 Hispanic/Latinx students, which was the ninth most among two-year schools.

Río Hondo College also ranked 17th with 1,885 total associate degrees granted to Hispanic/Latinx students. Additionally, the College’s family and consumer sciences/human sciences degrees major ranked fifth among two-year and four-year institutions with 141 total degrees granted to Hispanic/Latinx students.

“We are proud to serve a diverse student population and provide an inclusive and rigorous educational environment for all of our students,” Superintendent/President Dr. Marilyn Flores said. “These latest rankings are further evidence we are living up to our mission of helping people of all backgrounds achieve their educational goals and better themselves.”

Río Hondo College provides a range of support services to students, including some programs targeted for Latinx students:

  • Puente Project: The Puente Project aims to increase the number of educationally underserved students who enroll in four-year colleges and universities, earn degrees and return to the community as leaders and mentors for future generations.
  • LEGACIE: Latinos Empowered, Guided and Cultivated in Education (LEGACIE) mentorship program sets out to develop relationships with Latino men to cultivate their sense of belonging on campus and contribute to improved educational success.
  • Student Success and Dream Center: Home to the UndocuScholars program and services for undocumented students. Undocumented students are supported with academic needs, Dream Act applications and completing their educational goals. UndocuScholars is a specialized cohort program that provides comprehensive support and peer mentorship for undocumented students. In the fall, a special counseling course is offered for undocumented students.
  • Honors Transfer Program: The Honors Transfer Program is designed to challenge and support students through their academic journey and strengthen their transfer application. The program provides students with smaller class sizes, priority registration, access to a specialized counselor, priority consideration for transfer to select schools and more.
  • Legal Services for Undocumented Students: Free legal services are provided to students.
  • Río Raices: A new Latinx association open to all Río Hondo College equity-minded staff, faculty and managers.
