(Whittier, Calif.) — Students seeking academic support at Río Hondo College will benefit from tutor training program that has met internationally recognized standards for quality, preparation and service through the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA).
The College’s Learning Assistance Center recently earned Level I International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC), recognizing its tutor training program for meeting CRLA standards for tutor selection, training, direct service and evaluation. The certification is valid through February 2028.
“This certification affirms the intentional work taking place within our Learning Assistance Center to ensure our tutors are well prepared to support students in their academic journeys,” said Dr. Don Moya-Miller, superintendent/president. “It also reflects our culture of caring at Río Hondo College, where providing students with the essential resources, guidance and support they need to achieve their educational goals remains at the center of our work.”
CRLA’s International Tutor Training Program Certification sets standards for tutor training programs and provides a framework for preparing tutors to support students effectively. The certification also authorizes the Learning Assistance Center to recognize tutors who complete its CRLA-approved Level I requirements during the certification period.
“Students come to Río Hondo College with different goals, experiences and academic needs, and having strong support systems in place is essential to helping them succeed,” said Rosaelva Lomeli, board president. “This certification provides additional validation of the quality of work being done in our Learning Assistance Center and the College’s commitment to supporting students.”
The Learning Assistance Center provides tutoring, workshops, access to computers, study rooms, free printing and relaxation corners to support students in reaching their academic goals. Through the CRLA-certified training program, tutors receive structured preparation designed to strengthen the knowledge and skills they use when working directly with students.
At Río Hondo College, classes start every eight weeks, with on-campus and online options designed to help students reach their educational goals. Students can earn an associate degree, prepare to transfer to a university or pursue career education and workforce training. The College also offers two accredited bachelor’s degree programs in Automotive Technology or Electronic Digital Instrument. Learn more at www.riohondo.edu.
