Río Hondo College Women’s Basketball Ranked Among Region’s Top 25

Posted on February 13, 2025 by Río Hondo College | Category: College News,Homepage News,Press Releases

(Whittier, Calif.) – Thanks to an impressive recent stretch of play, the Río Hondo College women’s basketball team has achieved a top-25 position in this week’s Southern California total season ratings percentage index (TSRPI) rankings as compiled by the California Community College Athletic Association (3C2A). The 3C2A is an integral part of California's extensive community college system. As authorized by the State Legislature, the Education Code provides the 3C2A the opportunity and authority to establish the rules and regulations to administer the intercollegiate athletic activities of the nearly 24,000 men and women student-athletes in the state. Following a thrilling 83-80 win at Los Angeles Trade-Tech College on Feb. 5, the Roadrunners, under the direction of Head Coach Rene Herrera, had won four of its last six games and currently hold the No. 21 spot in the region with a .544 TSRPI. The game at Los Angeles Trade-Tech was one of the biggest of the season for the Roadrunners, led by an amazing performance from freshman guard Alexia Valencia. Valencia tied the women’s basketball program's single-game record by making 11 three-point baskets, the final one coming at the buzzer, to help the Roadrunners come-from-behind to win.

In attendance at the clutch win over LA Trade Tech were Superintendent/President Dr. Marilyn Flores, Asst. Superintendent/Vice President of Students Services Dr. Earic Dixon-Peters, and Board Vice President Trustee Rosaelva Lomeli.

The team's remarkable performance this season has been highlighted by strong leadership, relentless defense, and an offense that has proven to be both dynamic and efficient. Hererra has been instrumental in guiding the team, emphasizing teamwork, discipline and resilience. “The key to winning a basketball game is consistency—staying level-headed, not getting too high or too low, and recognizing the importance of every possession,” said Herrera. “Success comes from focusing on winning each possession one at a time.”

The Roadrunners have three more games remaining in the regular season as the team looks to secure a spot in the Southern California Regional Playoffs. The Roadrunners next host East Los Angeles College on Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 5 p.m. The team will also be in action at Pasadena City College next Wednesday, Feb. 19, and host Los Angeles Trade-Tech in its final home game on Friday, Feb. 21 at 5 p.m. Playoff matchups will be announced on Feb. 23 at the Southern California Postseason Coaches meetings.
