Additional Recovery and Support Update
Rio Hondo College provided a campuswide update confirming that faculty regained access to Canvas on Friday, May 8, 2026, at 3:00 PM and students regained access on Sunday, May 10, 2026, at 8:00 AM. Additional gradebook and course backup assistance sessions were offered through the Office of Distance Education.
The update also confirmed that several major Canvas tools and integrations had been restored, including Honorlock, Perusall, PlayPosit/WeVideo, 3C Media, and OneDrive for Canvas. Faculty experiencing issues with remaining tools were instructed to contact Distance Education support at [email protected] for further assistance.
Faculty and staff are encouraged to review and update their contact information through Personal Information to ensure they continue receiving important campus communications and notifications.

Weekend Support Operations
Rio Hondo College ITS and Distance Education teams provided weekend support coverage through Help Desk ticket monitoring, email support, and on-campus assistance for faculty needing district-managed devices or Canvas support.

ITS continued monitoring updates from Instructure, statewide higher education security channels, and peer institutions while reviewing additional safeguards and recovery procedures.

Faculty access to Canvas was restored for users with MFA-enabled accounts. ITS staff actively monitored login activity and provided support assistance throughout the afternoon.
A new Canvas SSO configuration was successfully tested in coordination with Microsoft Entra authentication updates and existing user sessions were revoked as a precautionary measure.
Draft faculty communications were finalized outlining the phased reopening plan, security recommendations, malware precautions, and support resources.
ITS staff coordinated security remediation efforts including revoking application sessions, reviewing SSO configurations, and evaluating LTI integrations such as OneDrive, Office 365, Zoom, Honorlock, and other Canvas tools.
Planning began for weekend support operations, including extended Help Desk coverage, Zoom support options, and access to district-issued devices for faculty needing assistance.
ITS leadership determined that faculty access would be prioritized for restoration first because faculty accounts were already protected with Multi Factor Authentication (MFA).
The College temporarily restricted Canvas access while ITS assessed the scope of the incident and reviewed guidance from Instructure and peer institutions.
ITS reviewed updates from Instructure and began evaluating temporary security precautions, including session revocations and account access restrictions.
Initial campus communications were prepared and distributed through email and text messaging to notify faculty, staff, and students about the developing Canvas security incident.
Rio Hondo College ITS began monitoring reports of unusual activity affecting the Canvas platform and coordinated internally with campus leadership and Distance Education staff.

The California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office distributed an additional statewide notice regarding the developing Canvas security incident and malicious login page activity.
Emergency SMS and email notifications were distributed to all students, faculty, and staff informing them that Canvas services were unavailable and under active investigation.
Email communication was sent to students regarding the Canvas outage and temporary access restrictions.
Rio Hondo College ITS disabled authentication access to Canvas for all students, faculty, and staff as a precautionary security measure to prevent further exposure and user interaction with the compromised service.
Email communication was distributed to faculty and Administrative Council raising awareness of the Canvas security incident.
The Office of Distance Education received reports that the Canvas login page had been hijacked by threat actors.
The Executive Director of ITS, Assistant Dean of Distance Education, and Cybersecurity Analyst verified reports of the Canvas outage and malicious activity and initiated active coordination and incident response procedures.
Rio Hondo College ITS began receiving reports of a malicious Canvas splash/login screen displaying a message from threat actors demanding payment related to allegedly stolen data.
