Free Tuition for Two Years
Río Hondo College students can receive free tuition for up to two years with Río Promise.
Year 1 Requirements
To qualify for free tuition for your first year at Río Hondo, you must:
- Be a California resident, permanent resident, or qualify for the AB540 nonresident tuition exemption
- Enroll at Río Hondo College as a first-time college student
- Enroll in a minimum of 12 units each term (fall and spring)
- Submit a FAFSA or California Dream Act Application each year
- Complete all required forms from the Financial Aid Office
Year 2 Requirements
To qualify for free tuition for your second year at Río Hondo, you must:
- Be a California resident, permanent resident, or qualify for the AB540 nonresident tuition exemption
- Have been enrolled as a first-time college student during the previous academic school year
- Have been enrolled in 12 units in the fall and spring semesters during your first year of college
- Be enrolled in at least 12 units each semester (fall and spring) during your second year
- Submit a FAFSA or California Dream Act Application for your second year of college
- Complete all required forms from the Financial Aid Office

1. Apply to Río Hondo College
Follow the steps to start your journey and submit an online application.

2. Complete Your Online Orientation and Placement Tool
Find and finish your Online Orientation and Placement Tool in AccessRío.

3. Create an Educational Plan
Complete one of the following:
- Attend an Educational Planning Workshop
- Enroll in a Counseling 105 class, if offered at your high school
- Make an appointment with a Río Hondo College counselor

4. Apply for Financial Aid
Apply for the FAFSA or CA Dream Act.
Additional Details
- Tuition assistance is only available during fall and spring terms (12 units are required unless you’re utilizing Disabled Students Programs and Services)
- Summer tuition assistance is limited and dependent on the availability of funding (12 units and consent from a Río Promise counselor are required)
- Accommodations for minimum enrollment may be provided, as appropriate for students utilizing Disabled Students Programs and Services
- Students are responsible for paying the health fee, student fees, upper division course fees, material fees, and parking, when applicable
