DSPS facilitates academic success for students with disabilities by providing equal access to educational opportunities in an integrated campus setting.
DSPS’s primary goal is to provide the accommodations necessary to assist students with achieving their educational and vocational goals while promoting self-advocacy and independent learning. DSPS provides:
- Support services
- Accommodations for academic college activities
- Adaptive equipment and computer technology
- Assistive technology training
- Specialized instruction to serve students with verified disabilities
Our office promotes shared responsibility with the student, professor, and college staff for student success. Students with disabilities are an integral and vital part of the Rio Hondo College community.
Our Mission
The Disabled Students Programs and Services is committed to providing students with disabilities the opportunity to effectively matriculate into the mainstream of college and community life by providing services that facilitate equal access to education, self-advocacy, academic self-efficacy, and personal growth opportunities in order to maximize individual student success. While remaining grounded in developing student independence in the post-secondary learning environment, the DSPS department recognizes the community’s cultural wealth and support systems that students bring to our campus.
DSPS values diversity and promotes awareness and retention by providing quality services and courses for students with disabilities. It is a resource for students and the campus community, providing guidance relating to compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments. Consultation and support to the campus are also provided in 508 compliance, distance education, and Universal Design and campus accessibility.
