What Happened?
On Oct. 19, 2023, Río Hondo Community College District (Río Hondo) discovered certain devices in its network had been encrypted with ransomware. Upon learning of this, Río Hondo took prompt action to secure the network, commenced an investigation, and engaged an outside cybersecurity firm to assist in the investigation, which determined there was unauthorized access to Río Hondo’s network between Oct. 12-19, 2023, during which time certain files were taken.
Río Hondo understands the gravity of the incident and wants to assure the campus community and the public that immediate action was taken to address the situation. Río Hondo retained a vendor to conduct a comprehensive review of the files to determine whether the files contained any sensitive student information. This process was resource-intensive and involved multiple steps to ensure the scope, accuracy, and completeness of the review.
What Information Was Involved?
On Jan. 25, 2024, Río Hondo determined personal information regarding some current and former students of Río Hondo may have been accessed by an unauthorized individual, including their names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and full dates of birth. Río Hondo then worked to identify and compile a list of residential addresses for these individuals.
