How to Petition for a Degree or Certificate of Achievement
Petitions are available online only, through your AccessRio Portal under Academics.
Rio Hondo College awards Associate in Arts and Associate in Science degrees. Students must complete general education requirements, in addition to their major requirements. A minimum of 12 units in residence is required.
Provided that a student maintains continuous enrollment, the student may elect to meet the graduation requirements in effect at the time of entrance at Rio Hondo College or at the time of graduation or any semester in between if the requirements have changed. The student may be required to make substitutions for discontinued courses. Continuous enrollment is defined as registering in at least one course each semester and receiving a grade of A, B, C, D, F, CR, NC, I or W at Rio Hondo College or any other campus within the California Community College or California State University systems. If there is a break in enrollment for more than three consecutive semesters, the student will be held to the new requirements listed in the catalog at the time of re-enrollment.
A student may be eligible for more than one major within a degree providing that all required courses and units for each major are completed. It is possible for a student to be awarded more than one degree providing that all residency, unit, general education, and major requirements are met for the additional degree.
Students planning to graduate should file the petition to graduate during the semester in which they will complete the requirements. The deadlines for filing graduation petitions are:
Summer: Third Friday in July
Fall: First Friday in November
Spring: First Friday in April Spring 2022 only – deadline is April 8
Applications are available online only. Please fill out the petition completely.
Transfer Degrees
The Student Transfer Achievement Reform Act (Senate Bill 1440) guarantees admission to a California State University campus for any community college student who completes an Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) at a California Community College. These degrees are intended for students who plan to complete a bachelor’s degree in a similar major at a CSU campus. In order to earn an ADT, a student must complete a minimum of 60 units of CSU transferable coursework with a minimum GPA of 2.0 (at least 12 units completed at Rio Hondo), be CSU-GE/IGETC certified, and complete the transfer major requirements. A student who has fulfilled a specific course requirement of a transfer degree major at another California Community College will be considered to have met those requirements at Rio Hondo College for the same transfer degree major. Students planning to complete an ADT must meet with a counselor.
